First Look: James McMullan

James McMullan Collection: art for Borges book covers for E.P. Dutton, 1960s-1970s.

This summer we received a great donation from illustrator, poster designer and long-time SVA faculty member James McMullan. McMullan worked at Push Pin Studios from 1966-1969 (along with Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast) and was one of the core group of artists who helped develop the artistic sensibility of New York Magazine. McMullan is also well-known for his acclaimed theater posters, in particular the ones he produced (and still produces) for the plays at Lincoln Center. The McMullan Collection is a thoughtful one that highlights his process for projects including posters, book covers, editorial illustration, and album covers. The original art is particularly gorgeous, and offers a compelling view of McMullan’s style of highly expressive realism.
